Unapologetically Punk, Unforgettably Real

On the last day of the year, I found myself diving into a quirky, ingenious comedy on Jio called We Are Lady Parts. Written and directed by Nida Manzoor of Polite Society fame, this series is an unapologetic, laugh-out-loud, coming-of-age tale with a punk rock soul. It’s bold, irreverent, and layered with sharp humour that doesn’t miss a beat.

Set against the backdrop of a misfit all-female Muslim punk band, the show marries music and storytelling seamlessly. Tracks like “Bashir with the Good Beard” and “Voldemort Under My Headscarf” are not just catchy but brimming with subversive wit. The music isn’t just a backdrop—it’s an anthem of rebellion and individuality.

What makes the series truly stand out is its audacious writing and nuanced characters. Every character in the band is richly drawn, from Saira’s fierce energy to Amina’s awkward charm, each grappling with their identity, insecurities, and dreams. Amina, the awkward lead guitarist who stumbles into the band, wrestles with her insecurities while learning to embrace her unconventional path. Amina’s parents are a joy, their warmth and quirks adding depth to her journey.

The writing shines with sharp, punchy dialogues and a vibrant style that celebrates the messy, beautiful chaos of women claiming their space and voice. It’s a story about embracing imperfection and making unapologetic choices—something universally relatable, yet so rarely seen with this much flair.

Though it debuted in 2021, We Are Lady Parts feels like a show made for the now. In an era where women everywhere are challenging norms and speaking their truth louder than ever, it’s a timely reminder of the power of finding your voice, even when it sounds a little punk.

I found the show utterly delightful and recommend it highly.
